How Do I Get My Home Remodeling Company To Appear #1 In Google?

That is one of the top questions that I get as a SEO consultant and web designer in the Cleveland  area. It’s a relatively complex answer to just respond with a single answer, so I try to get the dialog started by following up with these initial questions, just to learn a little bit about the company:

  • How long have you been in the home remodeling business?
  • How long have you had a website for your company?
  • What have you tried so far?
  • What are you goals?

The normal answers are, we’ve been a mom and pop or family remodeling company that has been in business for several years. They usually have had a website for a least a few years and have had some success. Their business normally is based on word of mouth, some local papers, and direct mail. Some have tried to do SEO themselves, and others have never even heard of SEO. Most have heard of Google Adwords and more than half of them have tried using it or have hired someone to mange their campaigns. All with the common replies of, “it was expensive and we didn’t get enough business to keep it going.”

Then, the subject of Home Advisor, Angie’s List, and Thumbtack will usually come up after the SEO/PPC chats. The business owner says the same thing every time: I’m tired of chasing leads and I’m tired of paying for leads that are dead ends.

Remodeling is hard work and requires a lot of different tools at your disposal. Yes, you need hammers, nails, saws, air compressors, tape measures, etc. but most of all, it requires EXPERIENCE.

You can say the same thing about SEO. There’s hundreds of different tools available for SEO consultants and business owners to use to increase their rankings in Google, like ahrefs, Moz, ScreamingFrog, or Majestic. Some are free and some are very expensive. Some, like us even have developed their own proprietary tools to reverse engineer the results. But, I think we’d both agree that it’s the experience that determines the outcome. One mistake with framing your new door could mean the collapse of your wall. One mistake with SEO could totally ruin your business and take you completely off Google. I’m working on almost 2 decades of experience as I’m writing this article. Experience matters, but so does keeping up with the latest in the industry since SEO changes often. What I did 18 years ago would not work today by any means.

I think you probably could if you know a little bit about websites and how they work. It’s something that I could teach someone that is very interested and has the time.
